A Sense of Expectation

I can feel my brow furrow. What is today good for and what will it bring? A friend came for a bbq and swim last weekend and we talked and laughed and ate and did I mention talked? No matter where the discussion led, work, books, social life, new hobbies, in crept the very real question of -- what do we want life to hold for us and where do we find it?  A more rhetorical question might be: Does the music come from the tip of the conductor's baton or from the harmonious chorus within?

Some think life is a series of coincidences that thread together and after a lifetime of waiting you finally look back to see if you spent it wisely and well. If we are talking about that, and an awareness that time has but a single use and should not be wasted, how can that be? What criteria is the basis of a well lived life?

A mutual acquaintance gave notice last week. She and her husband are implementing their 10 year plan to travel the world by boat. Imagine all those dreamy plans of exploration and basking in the morning sun. Anyone would rather be on the boat than standing on the shore waving them off. Why is it we become dissatisfied when great things are going on in the lives of people around us and we notice the frayed drapes and feel trapped by the status quo.

We shouldn't scold ourselves when choices do not bring about this kind of adventure. It's as if we look hard to find proof that our busy days are unfulfilled and hint of dissatisfaction. What - all this because we don't like being left behind?

I am glad when something wonderful happens, in seeing a friend's hard work has paid off. I appreciate living somewhere we can decide whether to keep walking when there is a pebble in our shoe, or reach down and scoop it out. And as for living a well-feathered life, everyone everywhere makes life a beautiful song.
